Ceramics and Maiolica is something I've been working at for a very long time, and I really enjoy the process. My pieces are twice fired and the term "glaze in glaze" is often used simotaniously with Maiolica, and the use of the word dates back to 11th century Italy. It is believed that the trade of pottery through the port of Majorca, Spain and Italy was the first use of this term and it just stuck, even though style and clay have changed and evolved over the centuries.
The process of painting three layers of opaque white glaze (formerly tin-glaze) and then applying the colorful under-glazes to a clean white surface gives me endless possibilities to create any subject matter. This is one of the reasons I never grow tired of it, that and it is part of my culture.
The clay I use is terra-cotta a low fire earthenware clay that pairs perfectly with the Maiolica. The red of the clay shows through slightly after firing which I love, because each of my pieces are hand-made and slightly imperfect and these elements tie together so well to create the "road side" style I try to achieve. These pieces are all food safe and functional. My only request is that they are hand-washed to insure the life of the piece. I like to use these pieces every day it adds so much color to my table.
